V0.11-0.12 Update: Another graphics overhaul


This update covers two months of work. The graphics overhaul took a lot longer than expected, leaving the game in an unplayable state after V0.11. So, I spent most of November wrapping up the graphics. I also added some new systems.

  • New notification system. This system is the main way for player to get events and quest logs.
  • UI overhaul. It's a big redo but definitely not complete. Some of the gray boxes have been replaced with prettier, on theme, sprites. But you should expect continued updates on this front. It feels bad that this is just one bullet point when this took so much time!
  • In game lights. Bugs, camp fires, and the main robot have lights that interact with the in game shadows.
  • Grass and better looking ground! This took a really long time to get right. But hopefully it makes the environment feel more dynamic and less placeholder-ish
    GRASS!
  • Quest system. This uses the alerting system, Day Night system, among others, to give players tasks throughout the game. Some quests added:
    • First defenses
    • First upgrades
    • Rescue humans
    • Rescue large human camp
    • Retrieve HDD
  • Tutorial quests. This uses the quest system to give the player starting quests to help them learn the game. One main early feedback is players feeling really overwhelmed with the amount of stuff they can do. This eases them into it.
  • Color adjustments and some post processing
  • And as always some bug fixes and QOL improvements.

On the docket for December:

  • Grid preview for building. This will make it super clear which tiles are occupied. 
  • A new enemy type. Hopefully. There are a lot of distractions in December but hopefully we can get this done!
