V 0.8.0 - humans automation improvements
This update spans the 2 months of June and July. I spend all of June and the first 2 weeks of July travelling. I did work while on the road but inevitably I got less done, considering this update spans two months instead of the usual one.
- Main change was human behavior. Previously it felt like humans were not really needed, and getting them to work for you was more effort than their value. Humans now are smarter. They will automatically seek out tasks in buildings that require doing. The goal is for the player to feel that more humans are good.
- Player can still manage exactly who works where. I might build on this system more later. If humans had different stats and perks, you might want to place a strong human chopping trees and a smart human doing admin work.
- Repair station: one chore that the player hates is repairing all the damaged buildings. Now it can automated with this repair station. I'm trying really hard to not jump into the polishing stage of game dev since the core loop is not yet established.
- Deep resource deposits: since humans will be a big part of the game, the current resource arrangements can get mined out super quickly. It does not incentivize the player to build infrastructure around resources. Deep resources take longer to gather, but have a lot more. E.g. an iron deposit has 30 iron ores while a deep deposit has 300. Although you might not spend time mining at it, you can justify placing a resource gatherer next to it and let the humans hack at it.
- A lot of bug fixes with this change in human behavior.
I think the next update I will continue working on the humans mechanic. I am considering allowing humans to fight the bugs as well. So if you are being overrun, the humans will take up arms to defend their base with you. There are a lot of open questions with this additional mechanic. E.g., can humans die? Do they need weapons to defend? When should they run rather than defend? etc...
